Step by Step Instructions Comments
Warm up with the first layer
When you put the mat down, mark/treat as before
Now pause and wait for your dog to offer either a sit or a down on the mat
When one of those behaviours is given, mark and give 3 – 5 treats one right after the other.
Release your dog, pick up the mat
Wait for 5 seconds and put the mat back down
Wait for the behaviour (Sit or Down) and then mark and give 3-5 treats one right after the other.
Release your dog and pick up the mat
Repeat until your dog is reliably sitting or laying down on the mat  4 out of 5 tries are successful (80%)
Troubleshooting:  My dog won’t leave the mat when the release word is given Troubleshooting: My dog doesn’t offer a sit or down
Make kissy sounds, tap the floor, and slap your leg, move away to encourage your dog to come off the mat. If this continues to be a problem, you may need to use lower value rewards for being on the mat and a higher value reward for coming off the mat. Cue a SIT or DOWN behaviour for up to 5 repetitions.  On the 6th repetition, wait and see if your dog offers the SIT or DOWN.
When to Advance After a  maximum of 5 minutes of training, say “All done,” put everything away until next time
